October is a great time to pick up items at Halloween stores for cheap special effects. Note that while work lights are great for low budget film and photography projects, you cannot attach gels or gobos to them. If you want to really save money and get started right away, pick up a high wattage work light at a big box store like Home Depot for about $80. Gobos are essentially a stencil with a cutout pattern for creating shadows and shapes when attached in front of the light. Gels are a tough, flexible film used to cover the light lens to change the color temperature. One advantage to a light like this is flexibility to add gels and gobos for more spooky effects. Special effects lighting on the cheap: For a semi-professional look, you can pick up spotlight, such as the Came-TV Pro 1000W Fresnel Tungsten Light for less than $200 (without stand). Shadow Lighting: Prominent shadows are created by using harsh lighting, with no fill, to light a subject. Because we cannot see details such as facial features and clothing, our mind fills in the details. Silhouette: With a silhouette, the subject is placed between the bright light and viewing area, creating just a dark shape. Uplighting: Placing a bright light below a subject will create deep shadows on faces that don’t normally occur in nature, creating an alarming effect. Shooting outdoors at night is another option, but is a little harder to control the elements. To DIY these techniques, find a dark space, or one where you can control existing lighting, such as covering windows. Special effects lighting, such as uplighting, silhouette and prominent shadow lighting, does not use balanced lighting, which distorts the scene. The common thread among scary lighting effects is that they distort reality in some way, creating shadowy mystery.Ī normal scene is well-lit using at least three points of light-a background light, a highlight on your subject and a fill light to eliminate shadows. Many of the following tips use the same techniques as the great filmmakers, replacing certain elements with common, affordable items. What makes movies and horror images so scary is special effects, and you can get some pretty cool DIY results without a big studio budget. Oddly enough, we welcome these emotions, especially around Halloween, watching scary movies and sharing pictures of eerie home décor. You can use the picture setting sliders to adjust to exactly how you like it. The good thing is, you can actually do a lot just by using these camera settings before you even apply a LUT.īelow the camera settings, you’ll see a button called “select LUT.” You’ll click this button and select the LUT you’ve made or downloaded. You’ll see the picture settings right below the Zoom & Pan. You’ll want to over to the the Camera Effects window in Ecamm Live. They are located within the camera settings. Those are the things like brightness, temperature, tint, saturation, and gamma. The second thing to consider is the picture settings within Ecamm. For example, the Canon M50 that has something called “picture styles.” All those things are adjustments to the actual color in your video before it gets from the camera to your computer. The first is your camera’s specific settings. There are three things to consider when applying a LUT. Things like lighting, the type of camera that you’re using, the lens, and then the settings available within the camera. There are a lot of factors at play when it comes to achieving the right look for your specific needs. So now you’re surely asking yourself “okay, how do I apply a LUT in Ecamm Live?ĭisclaimer: This process is not as easy as just “applying a LUT” and going live. They are often designed for film and not necessarily for live stream broadcasts. The only thing to keep an eye out for is that most LUTs are a little on the dramatic side. ![]() There are tons of options for where to get LUTs. They offer tons of templates for video and graphic design. ![]() Marshall recommends Envato Elements, which is a subscription-based service that starts at $16 per month. If you do a simple Google search, you’ll see tons of examples of the kinds of LUTs you can use to apply to your videos. There are lots of companies that create and sell packs of LUTs. All of this helps give your video a unique and professional look. So what you do is find a LUT, apply the look, and then adjust the intensity to your liking. ![]() What a LUT does is allows you to apply other settings to your video that aren’t necessarily available within the picture settings. If it helps, you can think about it like an Instagram filter.Īs you know, in Ecamm it gives you the option to adjust the picture settings like brightness, temperature, tint saturation, etc. It’s basically like a color grade for your video. Without getting too technical, a LUT contains all of the information for your video, like color, saturation, hue, luminosity, and a bunch of other stuff. ![]() Unless of course you're going for the mysteriousness of how many hit-points or how much damage your doing for "realism", but I'm going to assume no, because all calculations seem to show in the status text below. I think your idea of having health bars over monsters is an excellent one and would help combat quite a bit. And although you could click faster, there was a certain cycle of movement. The combat was essentially hack and slash as well (i may get flamed for saying that, as it was party based and still had many elements of strategy), but you knew when you swung your weapon, because that 1 frame animation showed it, and when the creature got hit, it blinked red. Sorry if I go back to Ultima 7 example again, but when I play this game I can't help but think of it. In regards to combat, I personally have no problem with the hack and slash style, I think what i'm trying to get at, is there's no rhythm to it. Maybe they can just be containers like chests. I think my meaning was more on the humorous side in regards to the barrels lol, however, they were the first object I tried to interact with when I started the game. They could even drop some loot occasionally. ![]() What would you like to do with the barrels? The first thing that comes to my mind is to make them destructible, so that you can smash them in. ![]() Actually, there already is an animation over the player character whenever you get damaged - it doesn't tell you where the attack came from though. Another solution could be to display health bars over hostile monsters. Your suggestion that the mouse cursor could change when hovering over a hostile is a good one. Slowing down combat would be easy enough, but without further changes I don't believe that would improve the game. To some extent I am satisfied with hack and slay, as long as it's nicely done and properly balanced. Given the tile-based nature and screen resolution of the game however, implementing a truely elaborate combat system would be very hard. I'm aware that this is not much and the combat system could need more complexity and interactiveness. Shifting equipment is also required for some encounters, because all monsters have special attack types and resistances. If you'd try a wizard or a ranger, the interactiveness of skills probably became more obvious. The warrior is not heavily depending on skills, although good use of "titan strength" and "battle tactics" can speed things up quite a lot. There is a little interactiveness in combat already, through the use of skills and equipment. The core of the game is indeed a rather primitive "hack and slay" combat system. The combat system is a more complex matter. The whole quest interface is still rather new and work in progress. You made a really good point about the starter quest. It just needs some fleshing out to pull people in. Great job so far though, looks like a lot of work went in to the details of this. A lot less epic feeling than it should be. So far the initial quest seems very bland. My constructive criticism would be to slow down combat, perhaps change the mouse icon to something else when hovering over a hostile, and make combat a little more interactive? Also perhaps more detail and depth to the quests. It appears that everything near you makes a beeline for you, enemies attack many rounds in close proximity to each other, you're not too sure if they're hostile or not unless you look at the combat log, and attacking appears to be a clickfest. I like the detail that has gone in to this (from what I've seen so far). I have to interact with my barrels you see. ![]() But I was sad I couldn't do anything to the barrels. You know, for when I get tired of travelling. So far I've explored a bit, attacked a LOT of ants, and have a chair in my inventory. They are now antialiased, where they never were before. One gripe: 3.1.1 came out, and it destroyed the look of Monaco at 9pt and 10pt. It would probably work smoother if there was something in the preferences that allowed the user to set a custom $PATH. There should be a box or something in the app's preferences that allow you to change the load order of geeklets, and shows you a list of them by name (not UIDs). So to shuffle their order in the plist, you have to write down which UID goes with which geeklet. If you try to fix this, you can, but you run into the fact that GeekTool keeps track of its geeklets by means of hexadecimal UIDs instead of the names that you already gave your geeklets when you created them. This can ruin a carefully-crafted desktop. ![]() For instance, it often reshuffles the order of which geeklets get loaded first. It could use improvement in certain areas. It's called GeekTool for a reason you have to already have some geekery ability to make it do much of interest.

Considering my general love for the Energy line, I’m expecting that to be another new favorite flavor, and one I’ll definitely have to horde for when the time comes that it’s no longer available. I didn’t see that one yesterday at the grocery store, but rest assured, if and when I do see it, I’m going to be picking it up and trying it as well. There’s supposedly an Energy version of it going around out there, too. It reminds me of why this is one of my top flavors of Dew. Well done, Mountain Dew flavor-makers, another home run in this case for me. So, yes, while I do think it’s been slightly tweaked from the last time I had it, I don’t dislike the changes that were made. There’s more for your tongue to taste than just Sweet and Grape. This has that grape as the main flavor, but there’s back-up notes of citrus to help give it more of a blended flavor. As I said, most artificial grape I find to simply be too overpowering. Though, I do feel that, like the smell, the citrus notes have been turned up just a bit in the mix. It’s still that artificial grape that I have come to love from Pitch Black. It’s definitely that same dark purple color with the fizz being more blue on the very top. Though, part of me wishes I had an old Pitch Black to try side-by-side with this one, or even a Malaysian one. Maybe a bit more of the citrus notes coming through, though I still feel like I’m getting artificial grape in there. Well, it still smells like the Pitch Black that I remember, at least for the most part. I don’t entirely know what that means, but let’s get to it. ![]() This version seems like it’s a dark citrus punch. Not that it lacked flavor by any means, but if other artificial grape was, “ GRAPE!!!” then Pitch Black was just, “Grape!” It was the right amount to me. I have talked about Dew flavors being a kick in the tongue, but most artificial grape I found was like a freight train to the tongue. I generally found it to always be too sweet and too powerful. To be very honest, I’m generally not a big fan of artificial grape flavor. ![]() Well, now that it’s cold, let’s see what we’ve got.Īs I mentioned above, Pitch Black was Mountain Dew’s grape flavor. It was just released this week and you know as soon as I saw some, I was going to get it. But, PepsiCo has thrown us a lifeline and, at least for a limited time, we can once more find Pitch Black on store shelves. But that’s expensive and the soda just wasn’t as fizzy as I liked. At best, you can get imported ones from Malaysia, which I’ve done. The only problem is that it’s been years since you could get Pitch Black here in the States. However, among the other flavors that vie for my top spots is Pitch Black, Mountain Dew’s grape flavor. Longtime readers with a really good memory might remember that my favorite flavor of Dew is Code Red.
